UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is intent on becoming the first man to hold two UFC belts simultaneously (BJ Penn and Randy Couture have held belts in two weight divisions, but not at the same time). It is a feat he already pulled off in arguably Europe’s best league – Cage Warriors.
As part their “You Saw Them Here First” series, Cage Warriors recently released previously unseen footage from McGregor’s last fight before he entered the UFC.
The fight tok place on December 31, 2012, at Cage Warriors 51. McGregor’s opponent was Ivan Buchinger. The bold, theatrical McGregor that now dominates the sport was on display even then, including calling the round, and more.
“They like the sound of a two weight world champion, winning the deuce in his hometown,” said McGregor. “I definitely see a twin (belt) on this shoulder, on New Years Eve.”
And so it was.
Further, McGregor even then talked about fighting at 170, as he is now.
“If Dan Hardy wants to not be having that (two Cage Warriors belt holder title), I’ll go up to welterweight, and knock him out,” said a smiling McGregor.
“I’m doing it better than anyone’s ever done it. That’s all I know. This is the reward for the sacrifice. … I’m getting him on New Years Eve, and then the fat paychecks in the UFC.”
Mystic Mac reports now that he is making over $10,000,000 for fight Nate Diaz on Saturday night, live at UFC 196.
Cage Warriors makes it return on April 15, with Cage Warriors 75, in London, England.
