Sage Northcutt was undefeated one of the UFC’s top lightweight prospects, but was handed his first loss after being submitted by Bryan Barberena at UFC Fight Night New Jersey.
Northcutt was also a two to one favorite coming into the bout against Barberena who took the late replacement fight on only eight days notice.
The fight was competitive in the first round with Northcutt landing some better shots and landing a few takedowns. Near the end of the first round it seemed like Northcutt was slowing down. Barberena took over in the second round and after landing a takedown, was able to control top position and land effective punches and elbows before securing an arm triangle submission.
Official Result: Bryan Barberena defeated Sage Northcutt by Submission (Arm Triangle, Round 2, 3:06)
After his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Barberena also took the opportunity to mock his opponent who has done an impressive front flip after each UFC win:
More about Sage Northcutt
TRAINING: I usually get up and go to the gym and grapple or wrestle for one of the morning classes. Later in the afternoon, I go to another gym and train with weights. At night, I go back and grapple more.
When and why did you start training for fighting? I started training at age four and competing at age five in karate/traditional martial arts. The sport karate circuits I competed in had point fighting and continuous fighting divisions, even for competitors as young as five years old. The reason I started training was because my older sister, Colbey Northcutt, who is also a black belt and multiple-time world sport karate and kickboxing champion, was competing and having fun, and I wanted to do the same. She was also Legacy’s amateur bantamweight champion.
What ranks and titles have you held? Third degree black belt in Taekwondo, third degree black belt in Kajukenbo, and a three-stripe purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu.
