Referee Eduardo Herdy has had some controversial stoppages in the past. At UFC Fight Night 62 on March 21, 2015 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Herdy awarded Leandro Silva the fight over Drew Doberwhen Dober had escaped an attempted guillotine, and was himself attempting to pass. In a nearly unprecedented move, CABMMA, the Brazilian MMA athletic commission, overturned the fight result, declaring it a No Contest. Herdy’s ineptitude robbed both fighters of the opportunity to do what they work so hard for, and the fans of a legitimate fight.
Just just over a year later, he was back on the main card of one the biggest event of the year, in front of a record 45,000 spectators.
Leslie Smith, who has fought comfortably at 125, knew she had a huge job in fighting Cris Cyborg, who dropped to a catchweight of 140 from the 170 range. Cyborg dropped Smith and started to ground and pound. While Smith was clearly in trouble, she also appeared to be defending herself intelligently, trying to get to base. You don’t stop a fight because you know someone is going to lose; that’s not how sports work.
A furious Smith could be heard cursing the stoppage during the fight announcement. And she made her feelings equally clear via Facebook.
“I’m pissed as hell about the stoppage,” she wrote. “The fights that were allowed to keep going in the same cage on the same night showed that my stoppage was definitely early. I would have liked a chance to try my hardest and I wasn’t done fighting. Now I have to go home to everyone who made sacrifices for me to get to this fight and even though they might not hold it against me l know it was a huge disappointment. I’ll fight her again asap as long as there is a legit ref like Herb Dean. Congrats Cristiane Justino Cyborg.”
Cyborg indicated at the UFC 198 post-fight press conference that she will likely next defend her Invicta FC featherweight championship.
