The planned Jorge Masvidal vs Leon Edwards fight set for next month at UFC 269 has been officially scrapped.

ESPN was first to report the news after being informed directly by UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell.

An undisclosed injury to Masvidal (35-15) forced him to withdraw from the Dec. 11 event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It is not immediately known when Masvidal, who turns 37 on Friday, will be able to return from injury. As for Edwards (19-3), the 30-year-old Englishman’s involvement on the card is up in the air.

Jorge Masvidal vs Leon Edwards removed from UFC 269 card

Masvidal has been idle since April when he was knocked out by Kamaru Usman in their championship rematch at UFC 261.

Edwards last competed in June at UFC 263. Beating fan-favorite Nate Diaz by unanimous decision in a special five-round non-title bout. He is unbeaten over his last 10 fights. “Rocky’s” last defeat came in Dec. 2015 to Usman.

In a recent interview, the current division king suggested a rematch with Edwards “has to happen” if he were to have beaten Masvidal next month. With the fight scrapped, one has to wonder how that affects Usman’s thinking on the bout.

Masvidal vs Edwards was a scrap to settle the score between the two top-10 welterweights. The pair had a backstage altercation in March 2019 after the Cuban-American knocked out countrymen Darren Till in the main event of a UFC Fight Night event. An exchange of words during a post-fight interview led to the now-infamous “three-piece and a soda” confrontation.

UFC 269 is headlined by a lightweight title bout between champion Charles Oliveira and division superstar Dustin Poirier.
