“Ooooh … wow.”

During filming of the 2012 documentary ‘The Proving Grounds’ shot on location at Jackson/Wink MMA in Albuquerque, NM, footage was captured of then UFC Light heavyweight champion Jon Jones knocking a training partner out with a left jab.

Another sparring partner quickly steps in and finishes the round.

The KO was an unintended consequence of normal sparring. There has never been a suggestion that Jones did anything innapropriate what so ever. Mixed martial arts is a tough sport, and the training is tough, and incidents like this happen.

Particularly given the growing awareness of the catastrophic dangers of Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) the leading gyms are all taking steps to reduce the severity and duration of sparring. But mixed martial arts is a hurting game, and sometimes people will get hurt in sparring, through no fault of anyone.

Immediately after the KO, Jones can be seen kneeling down beside his dazed sparring partner to make sure he is OK, but coach Greg Jackson urges Jones to focus on the job at hand.

“Jon, pop up,” said Jackson. “You gotta finish the round.”

Other coaches attend to the stunned fighter, and the show goes on.

Jones at the time was preparing for a bitter fight with former friend and teammate Rashad Evans. went on to beat Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira, and Daniel Cormier, before losing his title to his all too human shortcomings.

When he was stripped of his title, Cormier beat Gustafsson for it. Now Jones’ suspension is over, and a reckoning is coming.
