Martial Arts and Law Enforcement have always been closely linked.

Police departments must stay up-to-date on the latest martial arts innovations as part of self defense training. In fact, modern police training incorporates a lot of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in order to teach police officers how to control a physical situation while causing the minimum amount of harm.

In fact, the most respected referee in mixed martial arts (and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt), John McCarthy, was a former LAPD police officer, and continued to work the job for over a decade into his refereeing career.

So if police officers are martial artists, how well could a martial arts expert perform as a police officer?

The test has Jones attempt four drills:

Drill 1: Resisting Arrest

Drill 2: Emergency Vehicle Operation Control

Drill 3: K9 Unit

Drill 4: Shoot/ Don’t Shoot

Needless to say, Jon Jones – a champion collegiate wrestler – is extremely good in close quarters. During the Resisting Arrest drill, Jones displays a standing guillotine, a judo throw and an armbar on a suspect.

However, his experience shows that even an all-time pound-for-pound great can still make mistakes as a cop. In Drill 1 he is unable to prevent a gun from being drawn on him, despite having a dominant grappling position. In Drill 4 he is unable to notice a concealed weapon.

The following video shows UFC fighter Jon Jones undergo police training with the Broome County Sheriffs Office, in Binghamton, NY.

Jon Jones fans will marvel at his driving abilities or his impressive foot speed compared to a German Shepard. While his critics will point out the irony of the video, in light of his multiple run-ins with the law, or maybe condemn his takedown defense against dogs. It his defense, maybe it’s only Khabib Nurmagomedov who can grapple with animals.

Overall, I have Jones up on the cards after four rounds/ drills in Binghamton, NY (9-10, 10-8, 9-10, 10-9). If a fifth round ever happens, I would like to see Jones handle a hostage situation.
