Watch as he and his striking coach explain the subtleties of one of the most effective and controversial techniques in all of MMA.
When Jon Jones stepped into the cage last Saturday night for his return bout against Ovince Saint Preux, fans around the world expected to watch him tear through his #6 ranked opponent with relative ease. Ovince proved to be a game competitor though, surviving the full five rounds, but only to lose a unanimous decision to the former champ.

One of the main techniques that Jones used throughout the fight to make the difference was the oblique kick. It is a staple technique of the Jackson/Winkeljohn MMA camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is commonly used by many of their fighters with much success. It is a simple but potentially devastating strike that is a great tool for controlling the range. Who better to learn it from than the greatest fighter of all time and the striking coach that stands behind him?
Jones’ next fight in the octagon will be against the current champion Daniel Cormier. The fight is rumored to be the new main event of UFC 200, but whenever it does eventually take place, this technique will surely be used.
Should the oblique kick be banned from mixed martial arts competition? Or is it just something you should train to defend? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
