After his epic knockout of Jose Aldo at UFC 194, Conor McGregor called himself the top pound for pound fighter in the sport, but the media disagrees.
As they do after each event, the UFC released updated rankings after a select group of media members ranked fighters in every division.
This past weekend the UFC held UFC 194 on PPV featuring a couple key match ups ranking wise and the pound for pound rankings had some big changes:
POUND-FOR-POUND
1 Demetrious Johnson +1
2 Jon Jones +2
3 Conor McGregor +9
4 TJ Dillashaw +1
5 Fabricio Werdum +1
6 Robbie Lawler +1
6 Jose Aldo -5
8 Daniel Cormier
9 Luke Rockhold *NR
10 Rafael dos Anjos -1
11 Chris Weidman -8
12 Cain Velasquez -2
13 Ronda Rousey -2
14 Joanna Jedrzejczyk -1
15 Holly Holm -1
Jose Aldo had occupied the number one spot on the pound for pound list, but with his loss was dropped to the ninth spot. McGregor has been ranked third for his effort, which caused Jon Jones to move up two spots to second and flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson to take the top spot.
McGregor is undefeated in the UFC since debuting in 2013. He has won seven straight fights including the interim title fight at UFC 189 and became the undisputed featherweight champion at UFC 194 knocking out the only ever champion Jose Aldo in just 0:13 seconds.
However as as accomplished as that is and could make an argument for the top pound for pound spot, Demetrious Johnson’s accomplishments are undeniable. Johnson has defended his flyweight title seven times, which is as many total fights as McGregor has in the UFC.
Johnson first captured the UFC flyweight title back in 2012, defeating Joe Benavidez by split decision. In his seven title defenses, Johnson has three decisions wins and four finishes, one of which was a knockout and three submission wins. Johnson last defended his title this past September, defeating John Dodson for a second time.
