Ever since Ronda Rousey signed as the first female fighter UFC history in November of 2012, women’s MMA has exploded in popularity.

Rousey quickly gained notoriety as an unstoppable force in the bantamweight division, blowing through the majority of her opponents in just seconds using a combination of judo and jiu jitsu mastery.

As Rousey’s star began to shine brighter, the UFC saw an opportunity to give female athletes at lower weight classes an opportunity to shine as well.

In December of 2013 UFC added the women’s 115-pound strawweight division, which brought a significant amount of depth to their roster of female talent. Fighters like Joanna Jędrzejczyk, Rose Namajunas and Paige VanZant have all enjoyed increased popularity since fighting in the UFC, with VanZant recently scoring a gig on Dancing with the Stars.

This weekend features two fighters in said strawweight division, as UFC vet Maryna Moroz looks to rebound against undefeated Christina Stanciu at UFC Fight Night: Dos Santos vs. Rothwell, which airs live on FS1 starting at 12PM EST.

To further its support of female MMA, in June of 2014 the UFC inked a multi-year distribution deal with Invicta FC (an all-women’s MMA promotion) to show Invicta fight cards on UFC’s digital platform, UFC Fight Pass.

While it’s true that both casual and hardcore fans of the sport tune in to see high-level women’s MMA competition, it’s also true that fans follow female fighters because of the sex-appeal associated with seeing women square off with one another during weigh-ins and staredowns.
