Georges Laraque is one of the most feared fighters in the history of the NHL. Standing 6’3 and weighing 275 lbs., he was long considered the NHL’s Heavyweight Champ.
Nothing he faced in the NHL could possibly have prepared him to face a consensus top 5 fighter on the entire planet, however.
This match was set up as a special for the Canadian sports talk show ‘Off The Record’.

Georges Laraque had been released by his pro hockey team and thus was able to square with the famed UFC Welterweight champ Georges St Pierre.
The match was a three round grappling exhibition for takedowns. We see the host, Michael Landsberg, start the match and the 2 Georges square off.
At first, with the camera zoomed in; the 2 combatants appear to be roughly similar in stature. Only after a few seconds and the camera zooming out do we really see just how much bigger Georges Laraque is than St Pierre.
He stands 5 inches taller and, at 275 lbs., weighs in at 85 lbs. heavier than GSP’s reported walk around weight.

None of this stops St Pierre from dominating the match, however. Laraque managed no takedowns throughout the match, though he does manage to deny St Pierre a takedown in the 2nd round to generous applause from the crowd gathered at Tristar Gym.
The result should not be surprising, as St Pierre is a professional fighter and champion and Laraque is a hockey player.
A hockey fight is an exercise mostly in grip fighting, with both guys holding each other’s jerseys in an attempt to control the other man and land punches, so Laraque is not totally out of his element here.
Perhaps he just wasn’t ready to jump into the deep end with maybe the best MMA wrestler on the planet.
