It what was perhaps the most shocking moment in UFC title history, Matt Serra overcame huge odds to the first man to knock out Georges St-Pierre and win the welterweight title.
Serra had normally competed in the lightweight division, joined the fourth season of the Ultimate Fighter. This was the first and only season that featured UFC fighters making a comeback with a world title shot on the line. Serra defeated Pete Spratt, Shonie Carter, and Chris Lytle on the television show to earn the tournament win and a shot at reigning champion Georges St-Pierre.
Serra was considered a huge underdog coming into the fight who was defending his title for the first time since capturing it from Matt Hughes.
Serra known more for his ground game started the fight out boxing with St-Pierre happy to oblige him. St-Pierre tried to use his range to keep the shorter Serra away who was throwing big punches early. The two exchanged strikes for most of the first round with neither landing any significant shots.
That was until Serra landed a monster overhand right hand that wobbled St-Pierre and put him on a weak legs. St-Pierre got to his feet, but Serra swarmed and landed a series of right hands keeping St-Pierre hurt, who kept getting to his fight. The third time St-Pierre went down, Serra was able to pounce on top and starting landing heavy blows that caused the referee to step in and call an end to the fight.
The moment is still considered one of, if not the most, shocking moment in UFC title fight history.
