Alistair Overeem is one of the heavyweight division’s most feared strikers and he showed it this bout against former champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 141. Lesnar burst into the UFC into 2008 and quickly became one of the top fighters including winning the title despite his lack of experience in professional MMA.
After losing his title to Cain Velasquez, Lesnar was matched up with Dutch heavyweight Alistair Overeem. Lesnar proved to be no match for the superior striking game of Overeem and the fight was ended by TKO half way through the first round.
Play-by-play of the Fight
Referee Mario Yamasaki in the cage for the night’s heavyweight headliner, and the MGM Grand Garden Arena crowd is on its feet. Overeem walks forward as Lesnar bounces and waits. Leg kick from Lesnar. Jab from Lesnar. Overeem measuring in the pocket and just misses a big right hand. Lesnar misses with a punch that looked like an attempt to shoot. Overeem walks froward and pulls away when Lesnar grabs his leg. Low kick from Lesnar. Overeem with no head movement. He’s just stalking and loading up. Knees treaded. Overeem cuts off the cage and moves to the clinch again. Knees from Overeem land. Lesnar punches again, and Overeem is bleeding from the nose. Lesnar tries to hand fight as Overeem moves into the clinch. Knees and punches from Overeem. He’s taking over. Overeem kicks to the liver, and Lesnar drops to the canvas, holding his body, and Overeem pounces for the finish. Punches as Lesnar cowers against the cage, and that’s it.
