The British tabloid The Sun recently reported that a boxing match between UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and the greatest boxer of his generation, Floyd Mayweather Jr would be announced shortly. The Sun does not have the same editorial standards as does the New York Times, but it doesn’t do Bat Boy Escapes from Secret Government Prison, either.

Then McGregor’s trainer stirred the pot a little.

The idea makes no sense. Conor McGregor is explicitly contractually forbidden from fighting in other combat sports. And the bout is reportedly to be in Las Vegas, in the state where the contract is made, and Nevada law does not look favorably on breaking contracts (think of some guy hanging from a tree for delivering horses of less quality than promised). And Conor McGregor has as much of a chance beating FLoyd Mayweather in the boxing ring as he does outrunning Usain Bolt.

UFC president Dana White shot the idea down, hard.

But something is going on.

In fact, Floyd Mayweather Sr. confirms that talks are going on with “the MMA fighter.”

“[My son] had told me the other day that he’s going to take another fight,” said Mayweather Sr., as transcribed by Anton Tabuena for BE. “He told me it’s some kind of MMA fighter.”

“We’d beat the hell out of that man. My son can whoop him. He’s dead.”

“Yeah, that’s what I thought they would do (fight under boxing rules). That’s what everyone has been saying. I really don’t know exactly when, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to come around pretty soon. Won’t be that long.”

“I’ll tell you this, if it’s not MMA fighting, Conor is going to get the hell beat out of him. I know Lil’ Floyd ain’t going for being an MMA fighter, so that means that McConor is going to get the hell beat out of him still.”

Bodog has posted the odds for the bout:
Mayweather (-2000)
McGregor (+900)

So right now, Mayweather has better odds of winning than Andre Berto.

Nuts.
