UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and challenger Urijah Faber appeared recently in a joint interview with Colin Cowherd, ahead of their fight at UFC 199. The conversation turned to why Faber gets more credit for the success of the lighter weight divisions, than does Cruz.
“We started around the same time,” said Faber, as transcribed by Jed Meshew for MMAFighting. “It’s been 13 years for me. It’s been 11 years for him. I have more than double the fights… You get notoriety when you fight. He deserves notoriety but he hasn’t been fighting. He’s not made for battle. His mind is made for battle. He’s got heart, he’s got those kind of things but his body is not.”
Cruz rolled with the gibe.
‘Let’s say my body isn’t built for battle,’ responded Cruz. “Okay. Then I’m just beating you not built for battle because of my brain. Okay. That’s fine. I’ll take that. The point is I’m facing the best guys in the division since 2009. I’m talking top three. He’s not faced those guys and each guy that I’ve faced in the top 3 of each division has been either for titles or they’re contenders or they’re the best in the world still currently now. The people that he’s faced for the title he’s lost every single time he’s faced for the title.”
“He’s talked about fighting [the best] people, but he doesn’t beat them…Why didn’t you fight T.J. Dillashaw? He’s the best.”
Faber then responded with an startling if marginally veiled dig at the former Alpha Male member Dillashaw.
“I fought T.J. Dillashaw for 8 years, every day,” said Faber. “Dude I’ll smoke T.J. Dillashaw. He looks like a prepubescent little teenager right now because USADA came in.”
Cruz then cut in about the PED allegation.
‘I don’t know if he was or not,” said Faber, backtracking to a degree. However, Faber later reaffirmed the the charge, stating “it’s very obvious.”
The interview closed on a low note.
“He looks like Eddie Munster,” said Faber.
Cruz conceded that point.
“I’ll take it,” said Cruz. “Eddie Munster’s a stud.”
Dominick Cruz fights Urijah Faber On June 4 at UFC 199 in Los Angeles, California.
