In the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 81 in Boston, lightweights Anthony Pettis and Eddie Alvarez battled for what could be a possible number one contendership.
Official Result: Eddie Alvarez defeated Anthony Pettis by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Pettis is the former champion and this was his first fight since losing his title to Rafafel Dos Anjos at UFC 185. Pettis is currently ranked as the number one contender in the division.
Eddie Alvarez came into the fight off an impressive win over Gilbert Melendez at UFC 188 and having won four of his five. Alvarez is currently ranked fourth in the lightweight division.
About Anthony Pettis
Anthony Pettis embodies everything an MMA fighter should be. He’s quick on his feet, has powerful hands, possesses a strong stand-up game and knows how to entertain a crowd when he’s inside the Octagon.
No surprise that his nickname is Showtime.
I’m a very flashy fighter, Pettis once said, so I like any technique that makes the audience go crazy.
Pettis held the UFC lightweight title from August 2013 until March 2015, but he might be just as well known for his Showtime Kick against Benson Henderson in 2010 with the WEC title on the line.
In the fifth round of their tightly contested bout, Pettis provided the unforgettable move of the night, running off the cage wall and delivering a head kick with his right foot that dropped Henderson to the canvas. His acrobatics helped win the round and lifted him to a unanimous decision win for the WEC lightweight belt.
