For fans of Ultimate Fighting Championship superstar Conor McGregor, it is going to be a very long wait before they see him back in the Octagon.
In a new interview for “>TMZ Sports [h /t to MMAJunkie], UFC President Dana White was asked for an update on the 32-year-old following surgery on Sunday for a broken tibia and fibula suffered in his UFC 264 main event loss to Dustin Poirier. The promotional boss revealed that “Notorious” had been released from the hospital, and would be staying in Los Angeles for some recovery time before he decides when he’ll return home.
Conor McGregor will be out of action for a year following UFC 264
White also gave his expectation for when he expects the former two-division champion to return to action.
“He’ll be back in a year,” White said.
McGregor’s injury occurred last Saturday in the first round of his bout with Poirier, inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After missing a punch in the final 30 seconds of the round, the Irishman looked to return to his back foot, however, his ankle gave out in a gruesome scene reminiscent of recent leg injuries to UFC middleweights Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman.
Following the event, McGregor’s head coach John Kavanaugh claimed his pupil injured the ankle during training for his highly anticipated trilogy fight with the top-ranked lightweight. And speculated it could have lead to the injury the MMA world watched on July 10.
