Conor looks ahead to ‘leading option’ for his next fight— Robbie Lawler
Conor McGregor will be taking on Nate Diaz at welterweight (170 lbs) on March 5th at UFC 196 in Las Vegas, and if he has it his way, his next fight may very well be for the title at the same weight.
“I mean, why not? That’s probably the leading option,” McGregor said on Wednesday during the UFC 196 media scrum.

“I like Robbie,” McGregor continued. “I won’t say a bad word about Robbie. He fights with his heart. He’s been around the game so, so long… but if we fought, I would beat Robbie. I’m too fast for him. The size difference is not anything. I’ve stood beside him. I’ve seen him.”
“I mean, dos Anjos is an absolute bum, I swear,” McGregor said. “And he’s still complaining. How do you pull out of a fight with a bruised foot and he’s still talking all this sh*t and his team is talking all this sh*t? Man up and fight. C’mon. I don’t know what to say to this guy.”
“I respect [Lawler] as a champion, as a man who drifted off, came back, stayed on it and rose up and became the welterweight champion,” McGregor said. “We’ll see how that goes. That is an appealing one for me, the welterweight [title]. All the belts. We’ll see.”
So there you have it— McGregor still has his eyes set on becoming the UFC’s first two-weight division champion, but in this ever evolving drama, he will be hop-skipping the UFC LW Title and going straight for the coveted welterweight prize.
Of course, McGregor (19-2) has to get by Diaz first, which may be a tall order given how Diaz performed in his domination over Michael Johnson in December.
Both fighters are coming off impressive victories, but McGregor is considered the heavy betting favorite heading into the fight after recording seven consecutive victories in the UFC— including a 13 second stoppage over Jose Aldo to claim the UFC Featherweight Title at UFC 194 in December.
