Former WWE champion CM Punk announced he had signed with the UFC on Dec, 6, 2014. He has taken the move seriously, moving from Chicago to Milwaukee to be closer to coach Duke Roufus. Roufus says he should be ready in the spring of 2016. UFC president is scouting for a fellow green opponent as he films his “Looking for a Fight” reality television series.
Still, it has been over a year, and no date, no opponent, no fight. That is what has to happen if a responsible promotion signs a 37-year-old with no combat sports experience. But still, the hardcore fanbase is feeling jaded.
UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former title title challenger Kenny Florian discussed Punk during a recent FOX Sports 1 segment.
As time is passing, it starts to lose some of the intrigue, said Cormier, as transcribed by MMAjunkie. I think the iron was hot when he first walked out on the WWE and that’s when he would have made the biggest impression on the MMA community because WWE fans would have followed him to MMA.
Florian said – correctly – that there is in order to things in professional sports. You don’t sign at the top of the sport, and then start training for it.
They said he was going to fight in 2015. That he needs some time to train.,” said Florian. “Well, that hasn’t happened. I know he has dealt with some other injuries and things like that. But the fact that they say that he’s not ready concerns me. It shows that, listen, you don’t just jump into this sport and say you’re going to compete. It takes time and there’s a process. There’s a reason why they’re telling him to take his time. I think his training isn’t coming along as fast as they thought and it’s unfortunate.
