Shortly after winning the undisputed UFC featherweight championship, Conor McGregor revealed his next fight could be a lightweight. His coach, John Kavanagh even told UFC President Dana White that he never wanted McGregor to make featherweight (145 lbs.) again.
One man who would be more than happy to welcome McGregor to the lightweight division is number one contender Donald Cerrone. ‘Cowboy’ talked to Jim Edwards of the MMA Latest about a potential future showdown with McGregor:
Jim Edwards: Conor McGregor said should he win tonight, that he would like to move up to 155.
Donald Cerrone (interrupting): Why not?
Jim Edwards: Do you fancy that?
Donald Cerrone: Absolutely. That would be a huge fight. I’d be a fool not to want that fight, so absolutely.
Jim Edwards: How would it go down?
Donald Cerrone: Oh, I’d knock the f***king sh*t outta that kid. He’s too small to come to ’55. He’s jaw is powerful, he’s got a good talk. That’s for damn sure. He won’t fair well with the top, he might do well with the lower. If they do the same thing with him they did at ’45, and let him pick and choose his guys, then sure, but if they throw him into the top ten, then no way.
Jim Edwards: How do you feel about the fight being next week? Obviously a lot of the media hype in the past week has been around UFC 194. Do you think it’s detracted at all from your event next week?
Donald Cerrone: Do you think the McGregor fight distracted from my fight, is that what you are asking?
Jim Edwards: Yes
Donald Cerrone: Ya, but it’s over tonight. It’ll be done and the tides will shift and I’ll be all over the headlines, it’ll be great.
