Of all the arts, martial and otherwise, one of the most under appreciated is cinematography. According to the American Society of Cinematographers, it is “a creative and interpretive process that culminates in the authorship of an original work of art rather than the simple recording of a physical event. Cinematography is not a subcategory of photography. Rather, photography is but one craft that the cinematographer uses.”
The cinematographer (or DOP) works to ensure that the producer’s artistic vision is captured in the camera, with appropriate use of lighting, lenses, exposure, filters and more. However, like the great Jack Dempsey said to his biographer – “Tell them everything I know, I learned from the losses.”
Thus it was that this young cinematographer learned a profound lesson. He realized his mistake and vowed NEVER to zoom up close again.

Miesha Theresa Tate (born August 18, 1986) is the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s bantamweight champion. A superbly well-rounded fighter, Tate’s base is wrestling. She became a wrestler while attending Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma, Washington and won a state championship during her senior year in 2005. Turning pro in MMA in 2007, she won theFreestyle Cage Fighting women’s bantamweight championship in 2009. By 2001 she was the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion.
She lost the title to Ronda Rousey on March 3, 2012. However, UFC president Dana White cited the fight as the key factor in the creation of women’s divisions in the UFC. So the loss was ultimately a great win for women’s MMA overall.
Tate lives with fellow UFC bantamweight Bryan Caraway. In 2014, Tate was credited with saving the life of Bryan’s mother, Chris Caraway, when the latter suffered an asthma attack while scuba diving, stopped breathing and became completely unresponsive.
