To kick off the first fight of the UFC Fight Night 89 main card, JoJo Calderwood fought Valerie LeTourneau in the first women’s flyweight fight in the UFC. The UFC hasn’t officially announced the division, but the two women agreed to fight at the catchweight of 125 lbs.

The fight was exciting from start to finish, but Calderwood proved to be too much for LeTourneu and almost finished her in the first round with a spinning back elbow. But to LeTourneau’s credit, she toughed through it. In the third round, LeTourneau started to show the result of Calderwood’s damaging shot and after a huge front kick, turned away.

The fight should have been stopped at that moment, but the referee did not step in and LeTourneau took a couple unnecessary strikes before the fight was finally stopped:

Play-By-Play

Round 3 – Calderwood thinks takedown, but then gives up on it and pushes Letourneau to the cage. Calderwood lands a jumping kick to the body, and Letourneau is hurt. Calderwood pounces and punches her in the face a few times. It looks like Valel may stop it, but Letourneau survives. A few seconds later, Letourneau turns around like she’s hurt. It’s hard to see just what is going on. Valel looks like he may stop it, but he doesn’t. There’s a question if it’s an equipment malfunction. But after a few apologies and hand shakes between the two, the fight goes on. And just a few seconds later, again Letourneau turns her back and starts speedwalking toward the fence. Naturally, with the fight not being stopped by the ref, Calderwood goes after her. She kicks her in the back of the leg, then lands a few punches till Letourneau is on the canvas – and then, Valel finally steps in. It’s a TKO win for Calderwood, but as soon as Letourneau turned her back – again – the fight should have been stopped.
