Today a store broke in Peru about an armed robbery at a diner. UFC women’s bantamweight Valentina Shevchenko and her coach were eating at the time and were witness to the robbery.

It seems as though Shevchenko and her coach were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but her coach was shot and taken to the hospital. Shevchenko was unharmed.

Three armed robbers allegedly entered the establishment Sunday night, taking 5,000 soles – about 1,486 U.S. dollars – from the cash register as well as cellphones, wallets and other belongings from the customers. The robbers also assaulted anyone who resisted the robbery, splitting open the heads of three customers, according to the report.

The robbery and the shootout were captured by security cameras. Shevchenko can be seen in the video rushing to her coach’s aid after the shooting ceased.

When the robbers had completed the theft and were fleeing the scene, Fedotov, who was carrying a firearm, fired at the robbers, allegedly starting the shootout. According to witnesses, more than 15 shots were fired. One of the robbers, who hasn’t been identified, died in the shooting just outside the restaurant, while the other two fled the scene on a motorcycle. Additionally, two of the customers were injured. Natalie Fiorella Vera Marcos is now safe after having a bullet removed from her. Fedotov, who was shot in the abdomen, is still at Casimiro Ulloa hospital.

About Valentina Shevchenko

TRAINING: My days leading up to this fight start early in the morning. Each day increases in intensity as we are now growing closer to the fight. During the preparation, we are working on striking and grappling every day. In the afternoon, I do additional conditioning outdoors. Some days I do grueling conditioning in nature outside of the gym.

When and why did you start training for fighting? I started training Taekwondo when I was five years old because it’s a family tradition. My mother is the sportswoman of the family – she is a 3rd dan black belt in taekwondo. I have been training multiple disciplines since the early beginnings of my journey as a martial artist. My coach Pavel Fedotov has taught all his students mixed martial arts (what he called Universal Martial Arts) long before they were popular like today. Every time we trained, we practiced sambo, judo, wrestling, boxing, and taekwondo. Every week we competed in different styles and sometimes at two different events with different styles on the same day. I have been training mixed martial arts (MMA) since the beginning, and I started competing in MMA professionally in 2003.
