Five reasons that grappling might be the right thing to do in a streetfight, according to BJJ black belt, Stephan Kesting.

“Once again, the make-believe fantasy world of “Style vs. Style”! The world that ONLY looks good in choreographed demos and movies! It’s alright to practice a “Style”. Just have the good sense to know that when the REAL FIGHT in on, in the REAL WORLD??–“Style” goes out the window! And the only two things that remain, indeed the only two things that matter, are SKILLS and ATTRIBUTES!!”
“YES, I AGREE! good form and tecnique will only get you so far, it takes strength endurance and a shit ton of blood to make sure you’re done”
“With the introduction and on going popularity of MMA I didn’t know there’s still disagreement between Combatives groups and the Grapplers. It’s like the return of pre-UFC fan boy bickering:
“Kung Fu is best we know how to kill with one punch Dim-Mak!”
“Oh yeah? I know Judo; try that and I’ll flip you around like a rag-doll”
“I’ll be too fast for you; my Kung Fu is Ninja Kung Fu so come and get me!”
I thought the two sides should have all known by now that BOTH skills are equally needed to survive on the street? One to fight standing against multiple attackers then flee to safety and the other when the fight inevitably goes to ground.
Those who teach Combatives should have already known that by now because their system supposed to be realistic as possible, shame on them, and Grapplers should have also learned why MMA became so popular (and it isn’t solely because of grappling).
Holly Holm didn’t win last Sunday because she applied a frighteningly and inescapably painful Brazilian Jujitsu submission hold on Ronda Rousey did she? Ronda, being superior grappler in comparison was skillfully Pummeled then brutally Knocked Out by a former Boxing and Kickboxing champion.”

“Both sides needs to end their debates against each other and learn from one another.”
