•Led SEAL Task Unit Bruiser in the Battle of Ramadi, which became the most highly decorated Special Operations Unit of the entire Iraq war;

•Used to tap out 20 Navy SEALs per workout; and,
•Has a real cool motto – “Discipline equals freedom.

Willink is now retired, and recently wrote a book, Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win. In Extreme Ownership, Willink and fellow SEAL Leif Babin share hard-hitting, combat stories that translate into lessons for business and life.
Tim Ferris recently conducted a wide-ranging interview with Jocko for his four-hour workweek site.
One of the topics discussed was “real” martial arts for self-defense. His answer is controversial, but realistic. Martial arts have limited effectiveness against multiple attackers, armed attackers, etc. The best thing for self-defense is a concealed firearm.
“First and foremost, if you’re talking about true self-defense, to protect yourself from other evil human beings in the world – it’s a gun. It’s concealed carry. And that is what you should train to do. You should go to the range. You should get a gun.
“And if you are in situations where you need to protect yourself, that is how you protect yourself, against people. Because other people have guns. They have knives. They’re psychotic. They’re on drugs. And if you want to protect yourself, that is how you do it.”
The BJJ black belt also goes on to say that BJJ is one of the best self-defense martial arts, as it wrestling. He further discusses weapons-based martial arts, explains that the answer isn’t always BJJ, and that discipline is what matters.
