A Taser, or conducted electrical weapon (CEW) is an electroshock weapon sold by the Scottsdale, Arizona based Taser International. It fires two small dart-like electrodes, which stay connected to the main unit by conductors, to deliver electric current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles causing “neuromuscular incapacitation”. Someone struck by a Taser experiences strong, generally immobilizing, involuntary muscle contractions.
The name Taser was coined by its inventor, NASA researcher Jack Cover, who began work on it in 1969. He completed the first model in 1974, and named it after his childhood hero Tom Swift (“Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle”).
