Here’s why…
First thing to pay attention to is the footwork – throughout this little roughhousing session, Nick maintains a wide stance. This helps him to stay on his feet no matter how hard the guys push.
Notice the way he clinches, pressing his forearms into each opponent’s shoulders. When he wants to prevent a guy from grabbing him, Nick does it by pushing their arms away at the elbow.
Also, Nick keeps pulling and pushing at the neck to control his sparring partners’ movements and disrupt their balance.
Finally, another tactic Nick uses heavily is grabbing the opponent’s’ clothes – this helps him to maintain a tight grip and also prevent them from moving freely. He even pulled one guy’s shirt on his head to obstruct his view!
Nick is a veteran of real violent confrontations. With this experience, he is able to teach simple, yet very effective ways to defuse conflicts or go pre-emptive when necessary.
