Mixed martial arts showcases the most sophisticated level of unarmed combat known in world history. And it is preceded by trash talk the likes of which is rarely equaled past the third grade.
Take, for example, The Poopypants Incident.
The next challenger for UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping is Yoel Romero. Romero has been advocating for the fight for months on his social network. Bisping has been by turns dismissive and stinging. Thursday ended in a y, so Bisping and Romero were chewing each other out on their smartphones.

Romero replied, but his post betrayed a command of the English language not previously known to be possessed by the former Cuban Olympian. In his defense, Bisping’s knowledge of Spanish ends at “corona” (it means crown).

Sherlock Bisping made a deduction and added an invitation.

And Romero did.

Most trash talk in the sport now is done over social networks, so this one was refreshing.
First Bisping delightedly determines that this is in fact the real Romero, and not a troll.
Romero appears to be calling in with a potato, which doesn’t matter, as where ever he was, you can hear him. The exact transcription is, “Wordswordswords FIGHT wordswords.” Then repeat.
This is repeatedly interrupted by Bisping referring to Romero as Poopypants, an insult inspired by an apparent accident at UFC Fight Night 35 during a fight with Derek Brunson almost exactly three years ago.
Undaunted Romero continues with the words, and Bisping switches up his game from crowing about poop to questioning the Cuban’s command of the English language.
He asks Romero to spell “Steroid.”
Then he offers some help.
“S-T-E-R … now you have a go,” said Bisping.
Then Romero hung up.
And out the heavens came word of sanity – Bisping’s wife Rebecca said he was being immature.
He was. We all are.
Bisping is coming off minor knee surgery and expects to fight as early as May.
