Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson failed in a title bid for the second time in a row to UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC 209 on Saturday night.

Last night was not the outcome I wanted,” he wrote toDamon Martin for FOX Sports. “I wanted that title more than anything, but it didn’t go my way, Thompson said. Tyron is a great fighter, a deserving champion, and a worthy opponent.

We’ll fight again, I know it.

In the meantime, I’m gonna go home and see my dogs, hang out with my family, and just appreciate the fact that I get to do what I do for a living. I am blessed by everyone’s support and love and hope that every time I step on that canvas that love is repaid.

I welcome the next challenge with open arms and a full heart.

What’s next for Wonderboy is uncertain at this point, and the same can be said for Woodley. After the fight UFC president Dana White spoke to Megan Olivi and said he thought Thompson won the fight.

I had it 3-2 for ‘Wonderboy.’ I didn’t think it was going to be a draw, said White, as transcribed by Adam Guillen Jr. for MMA Mania. From the fight that I watched, I had it 3-2 ‘Wonderboy’ and one of the judges scored the last round 10-8, which is insane.

Tyron is the champ, man. He won tonight and, you know. Listen, me, the fans and everybody watching. we are not judges.

The judges called him the winner tonight so he’s the winner and let’s see where we go from here. Listen, this fight didn’t help [Woodley’s] case in any way shape or form. But, I don’t know, we’ll see what happens from here.”
