With Gustafsson injured, Jedrzejczyk will now defend title in main event of UFC Berlin
Now UFC straw weight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk will step in to defend her belt and take the main event spot of UFC’s first trip to Berlin.
This morning it was revealed that Alexander Gustafsson has been injured and will be unable to fight Glover Teixiera in the main event of UFC Berlin. Now UFC straw weight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk will step in to defend her belt and take the main event spot:
UFC No.2 light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming UFC FIGHT NIGHT Berlin main event bout against Glover Teixeira due to injury.
UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk (9-0-0), from Poland, will step into the main event slot at o2 World in Berlin to defend her belt against no.3 ranked Jessica Penne (12-3-0) from California, USA. This historic match up will be the first title fight to take place in Europe outside of the UK and the first ever female title fight in Europe.
Following her impressive title win over Carla Esparza in March this year, Jedrzejczyk returned to Poland a national hero and began to train for her next fight almost immediately, eager to defend the belt against the next contender.
Apparently Alexander Gustafsson was dealing with a couple small issues that let to the decision to remove him from the card as he was not able to put in a proper training camp:
According to Gustafsson’s manager Manos Terzitane, “The Mauler” has been dealing with back issues as of late, as well as other small injuries. Terzitane said the hope is for Gustafsson to return to action “around September,” but they don’t want to rush things. Surgery is not required.
“With only six weeks left, we decided to pull him off the fight as he is not able to have a proper training camp,” Terzitane wrote via text message. “Instead [we ‘ll focus] on rehab and let him come back 100 percent.
“[We] don’t want to rush it this time. We want the world see the best Alex and we know that perfection needs time.”
