1. No One New Has Stepped Up
Perhaps the biggest reason for Brock Lesnar continuing to be the sport’s biggest draw is the most simple one—no one else has stepped up to take his place.
Sure, Cain Velasquez took his place as the Heavyweight Champion, but the media still hasn’t picked up on the heavy-handed fighter from the American Kickboxing Academy. The hardcore MMA fans will certainly tune in to watch the new champion, but your average fan—the casual fan—may not even know who he is, other than that he’s the guy who beat Brock.
2. Pay Per View Buys
Though the ratings of The Ultimate Fighter have been mediocre, that show is not what the UFC is most concerned about. There’s only so much money to be made on cable television and although they would prefer the show to be putting up great numbers, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of concern that it isn’t.
3. Ability to Sell Fights Through Words
With fighters like Frank Shamrock, Frank Mir, and Tito Ortiz paving the way for trash-talking in mixed martial arts, the sport has never been more exciting. Now there is a new breed of fighters like Chael Sonnen, Michael Bisping and even Brock Lesnar who are carrying the torch today.
4. Unique Crossover of Pro Wrestling Fans
Let’s get the collective eye-roll from the MMA community out of the way. Yes, pro wrestling is fake. No, it’s not the same thing as MMA.
5. The Freakshow Factor
No matter if it’s boxing, professional wrestling, or mixed martial arts; fans have always been drawn to the top contenders heavyweight division.
