Whittaker: I want where ever the belt goes
Robert Whittaker: “If Michael Bisping loses that fight, or if he’s tied up or whatever, I want that belt. Wherever it goes, I want it.”
The biggest story out of UFC on FOX 24 may end up being the emergence of Robert Whittaker as one of the greatest fighters at middleweight, or anywhere. Since debuting at 185 on November 8, 2014, Whittaker has won six in a row, earning a performance bonus in four of them. And Saturday he stopped Ronaldo Souza in the second, having survived ‘Jacare’ on his back in the first.
Whittaker overcame -230 odds to win, and was asked after the event if he expected the outcome.
‘Expect’ is not the word – I prepared for the fight to be that way, said Whittaker to Matt Erickson and Ken Hathaway for MMAjunkie. I’ve been training countless hours in the gym, out of the gym. We went through all the situations and scenarios that could possibly happen, and we drilled them. And this was a scenario that arose. I’d been working that, and I executed the game plan.
Division champion Michael Bisping fights welterweight G.O.A.T. Georges St-Pierre, perhaps in September. Whittaker wants whoever holds the belt.
I’m on my title run, and I want that belt, said Whittaker. If Bisping loses that fight, or if he’s tied up or whatever, I want that belt. Wherever it goes, I want it.
Yoel Romero remains the #1 challenger, and if GSP wins, he is widely expected to abandon the belt, in favor perhaps of a fight vs. Conor McGregor. Most likely for Whittaker is a fight with #2 contender Luke Rockhold. That’s a great fight.
