UFC president Dana White appeared recently on FOX Sports 1, to discuss the biggest show in mixed martial arts history. UFC 205 takes place on November 12, 2016, at Madison Square Garden, in New York City, New York. White said that the card had already set the MSG gate record, although he did not name a specific number.
“I wanted to make sure when we went to New York, we delivered,” said White, as transcribed by MMA Fighting. … “It’s the biggest, baddest card we’ve ever done in the history of the company.”
The MSG record was set back in 1999 by Lennox Lewis vs. Evander Holyfield, with 21,284 spectators, and a live gate of $13,500,000. Breaking that figure would also break the UFC’s own gate record of $12,075,000, set by GSP vs. Jake Shields at UFC 129 in 2011 in Toronto.
UFC 205 is headlined by featherweight champion Conor McGregor challenging lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez for his belt. The negotiations for the fight were not easy, with White at one point tweeting that he was looking at Alvarez vs. Nurmagomedov.
However, challenging the dealmaking, McGregor has headlined three fights in a row that broke the 1,000,000 buy mark and is about to do another.
“He’s a little tough to deal with, but he’s worth it,” said White. “All the other antics and everything aside, Conor McGregor will step up and fight anybody, anywhere, anytime. I’ve never been in a situation where somebody pulls out the week before a fight and he literally does not care who he fights.”
