White: Nate Diaz can sit out the rest of his career
Dana White: “Nate Diaz can do whatever he wants to do. Nate can sit out and not suck any UFC whatever, for as long as he wants to. Who cares, he’s a grown man.”
UFC.com recently debuted a new page – The Download – in which UFC president Dana White responds to the issues of the week.
UFC lightweight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone wants to fight as many people as possible, and he doesn’t care who. This has earned him praise from White, but scorn from fellow lightweight Nate Diaz.
“Some people just suck way too much #UFCd–k,” tweeted Diaz. “An they where cowboy hats.”
White said talk is not going to make Diaz any money.
“Nate can do whatever he wants to do,” said White. “Nate can sit out and not suck any UFC whatever, for as long as he wants to. Who cares, he’s a grown man. Sit out for as long as you want, sit out the rest of your career, it’s your decision. But to start making fun of guys who actually like to fight, and guys who go out there and put on unbelievable fights and people love to see him? He steps up and does what he does. People love Cowboy Cerrone. Nate wants to talk about making money, but there’s only one way to make money, and that’s fighting.”
To answer White’s rhetorical “who cares” question, the fans care.
Nate Diaz has had a long and extremely fan friendly career in the UFC. In 2007 he fought five times, three of them on TUF 5. He fought three times each in 2008, 2009, and 2010. In 2011 he fought four times, capping the year with a win over Cerrone. 2012 and 2013 saw just two fights each.
This year he has not fought at all; that’s just wrong.
Whatever it takes to get Nate Diaz back in the Octagon is what should happen. Trading barbs in the media is likely not going to get us there, sadly.
