UFC president Dana White spoke with the media after news broke that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones had been informed of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an in-competition sample. If the test failure is substantiated, the 30-year-old Jones could be suspended for four years.
It’s brutal, it’s unbelievable, said White, as transcribed byThomas Myers for MMA Mania. There’s never a good time [to hear news like this] — it’s always bad, especially with somebody like Jon Jones. He’s the best ever in MMA to do it. He’s the best ever, which makes it even more unfortunate. If this ends up where he gets a two or three-year [ban] this might be the end of his career. So to talk about his legacy? It would probably be the end of his career.
How old is Jon now, 30? Trying to make a comeback again [at 34] — and you look at what could have been, what he could have done — it’s sad. I don’t know what to say about this one.
Jones vs. Cormier is believed to have broken 800,000 PPV buys. The league was planning Jones vs. Brock Lesnar or Jones vs. heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, either of which would have crushed that number.
