The all time UFC pay per view champion was long UFC 100 on July 11, 2009, headlined by Brock Lesnar, with 1,600,000 buys. Then Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz at UFC 196 crushed the record, with 1,900,000 PPV buys. UFC president Dana White reported that the Diaz-McGRegor rematch at UFC 202 was on track to set yet a new record.
So the two biggest selling fights in UFC history are:
1. UFC 202: Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2 (Unknown)
2. UFC 196: Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 1 (1,900,000 PPV buys)
Diaz won the first one, McGregor won the second. In the Octagon McGregor called out Diaz for a fight at 155. Diaz fights at 155. Diaz accepted.
So a trilogy fight would appear to be as obvious as being punched by Anthony Johnson. However, there is a problem in the way of all that money – UFC featherweight Conor McGregor.
It is not the McGregor part that is the issue, it is the champion part.
McGregor KOed José Aldo with a straight left at UFC 194 on December 12, 2015, winning the UFC featherweight championship. Belts have to be defended.
The new featherweight champion’s next fight was vs. lightweight Nate Diaz, at welterweight. And he lost, so instead of defending his title, he opted for a rematch.
So the UFC had Aldo fight #1 contender Frankie Edgar for the interim title; Aldo won.
UFC President Dana White appeared on ESPN and FS1 late Saturday night talked about McGregor’s belt responsibilities/.
“We’re definitely not doing this a third time right now,” said White on FS1 as transcribed by Luke Thomas for MMA Fighting. “I don’t think there’s anybody that doesn’t want to see this fight again, but Conor’s either going to go defend his title or give his title up and then we’ll figure out where to go from there.”
White explained McGregor’s options clearly on ESPN’s Sportscenter.
“Conor has to defend his title, or make a decision to give it up or whatever he wants to do,” said White said. “I don’t know. I gotta sit down and see what’s next.”
White was asked what he would do, in Conor’s shoes.
“If I was Conor, I’d defend my title,” said White.
So it look Conor McGregor has a decision to make.
