Several days ago, hackers who identify with a collective known as Anonymous briefly caused a redirect fo UFC.com to a page protesting the UFC’s support of Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). SOPA is a bill to vastly expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property.

Critics identified it as a potential threat to the open nature of the Internet. Supporters identified it as a way to stop theft of property on a staggering scale. For example, in the decade since Napster began p2p file-sharing, music sales in the U.S. have been cut in half. Sales of movies for home viewing are following a similar, but steeper pattern.

It is human nature to like something that benefits you. The insitution of slavery offers an example – it was hard for slave owners to comprehend that slavery was unethical, as they benefted from it. Slaves understood it without explanation.

People who benefit from the illegal download of compelling content find it hard to comprehend that pirating UFC PPVs is unethical. UFC President Dana White understands it without explanation.

Thus his support for the draconian SOPA bil, which appears dead in congress, but will apparently be revived at least is part in a different bil.

Hackers spouting the phrase “information wants to be free” would do well to consider the actual quote. Stewart Brand, who founded the Whole Earth Catalog, coined the phrase at, ironically, the first Hackers’ Conference in 1984. Brand said to Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak “on the one hand information wants to be expensive, because it’s so valuable. The right information in the right place just changes your life. On the other hand, information wants to be free, because the cost of getting it out is getting lower and lower all the time. So you have these two fighting against each other.”

He later published the line in simpler form. “Information Wants To Be Free. Information also wants to be expensive. …That tension will not go away.’

The tension has not gone away. Yesterday, White and members of Anonymous engeged in an extended dialogue on twitter that appeared to end well. However, imediately afterwards UFC.com as hacked again, and what was purported to be White’s Social Security number, cellphone number,s address, legal cases and other information — including his wife’s name, was posted publicly.

However, the infomation is not White’s. A phone number for example belongs to an entirely unrelated Las Vegas resident, who has received over 500 calls so far.

Apparently White’s name is associated with the woman’s address as a previous resident of the house had a white cat named Dana, and used to name to detect junkmail.

White recently came on the UG to bring attention to what happened, and to bolster his characterization of the hackers as terrorists.

protesting and fucking with innocent people are very different things.

In fact terrorists see themselves as freedom fighters all over the world.

Collateral damage!

Not condoning the harassment of the lady but I am glad someone is doing something about things like SOPA, while most simply moan about it on the internet. (That goes for all the other crazy shit that is going on these days too)

I also think it is a little naive to think Dana simply does not understand what he is supporting and that his ignorance is the reason for backing SOPA. I would guess he has very good reason to back this and it has more to do with who his friends are, than what the bill means to his business.

Dana you’re targeting the wrong people and this whole this a gross misunderstanding

Anonymous doesn’t care about MMA nor pirating your streams. Half of the people who work for them probably never heard of Chuck Liddell.

They’re protesting your support for a bill many people perceived as not just anti-piracy, but gives the government far too much powers to the point of censorship and a reduction in freedom of speech. There’s a reason why most major tech companies including Microsoft (probably the biggest victim of piracy out there), Google, and Facebook were vehemently opposed to this bill.

Please please please understand this before continuing this fight. Also, please actually read those bills before going ahead and supporting them. Otherwise you’re going to wake up one day and find 30 million in your bank account missing, and all of your servers hacked several hours before the start of a major PPV. These guys cost Sony $175 million last year after Sony hit some 15 year old kid with a lawsuit

I’m a believer in patent protection. SOPA and PIPA, however, are pure and utter shit.

You’re usually spot on but in the wrong on this one. It’s completely nuts you don’t seem to understand why they’re attacking you in the first place (no, it’s not because they give a shit about streaming PPVs)

censorship and first amendment rights…..not piracy

Comparing them to 9/11 was bullshit Dana and fucking classless. With all the support you give the military through the UFC, I thought you would’ve had better sense. But to dishonor the thousands who died that day by comparing the AQ operatives who committed that massacre to pc hackers?!? Are you fucking kidding me? A few scared citizens because their addresses got out and your hacked site compares to thousands dead in the single most violent act of terrorism on American soil??? You know you gotta think before you speak. Most of my friends in the service are pissed about that comparison.

a terrorist is someone that kills and end lives to intimidate. Not some computer hacker that cracks the site of a billion dollar company and says fuck you.

apparently you havent been on my twitter. what would you call them gangsters, thugs, not everyone on a computer is a 14 year old kid. there are some creepy fuckers out there. i call them fuckin terrorists! you call them what you want and can have your own opinions. thats what i love and have always loved about the UG! like i said sopa isnt perfect and i had tons of people blasting me for our support of the bill and i never said a word to them. then they stared fucking with UFC.com thats what started the shit. it wasnt anonymous they came in after i told the hacker to do it again.

Like it or not you are now the mouse instead of the cat.

Anon broke into the Pentagon on multiple occasions.

They took down one of the top internet security companies with ease.

You think you can procure better defense than that?

You gunna mean mug them into submission?

You think you are the man,…. but you are just A man.

We are millions and millions of men that pay you.
