On May 6, 2016, a report surfaced in Rupert Murdoch’s The Sun that then UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. were about to announce they’d be boxing in Vegas. The pair have engaged in an on and off bicker battle since, with UFC president Dana White repeatedly explaining that Mayweather needed to call him.
Earlier this week, things suddenly got more realistic, with Mayweather naming his price.
My number was a guaranteed $100 million, that was my number, said Mayweather. We’re the A-side. … We are willing to give him $15 million, and then we can talk about splitting the percentage, the back-end percentage on pay-per-view.”
White offered a counter.
“We’ll pay you $25 million, we’ll pay Conor $25 million, and then we’ll talk about pay-per-view at a certain number,” said White. “There’s a real offer.
You think that you’re the ‘A’ side? How are you the ‘A’ side? The last major fight that you were in, you left such a bad taste in everybody’s mouth, nobody wants to see you again. His last fight did 350,000 pay-per-view buys. Conor’s last, Conor did 1.3 and 1.5 million buys, so I don’t understand you think you’re the ‘A’ side. There’s a reason you want this Conor fight so bad, because you know that’s your money fight.”
Mayweather had a four-word response, and wriggled his wrist, which was adorned with a Hublot watch.
“You’re a f***ing comedian,” said Mayweather. “You’re a f***ing comedian.”
Now White has responded, in an interview with TMZ Sports.
“First of all, Floyd thinks he’s so much bigger than Conor. He’s wrong,” said White, as transcribed by Dan Hiergesell for MMA Mania. “Floyd has gone undefeated for 20 years and I give him all the credit in the world for doing that. Conor has been around for three or four years. For him to think that he’s a much bigger star than Conor isn’t true. I’m not going to pay him way more money than I’m going to pay my guy.”
“We all know $25 million isn’t peanuts and so does he. He’s hanging his watch out the window, his watch is the problem. When you’re wearing a watch that is $250,000 you’re going to need $25 million real quick, pal. Hey, Floyd. Taxes are coming up, too, buddy. Gonna be all over you, pal.”
Then the “comedian” chuckled.
