What is GSP going to announce on Friday?

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will speak on Friday as part of a media-attended corporate function in his native Montreal, Quebec. He intends to make an announcement there about his future. The nature of that future is unknown, and could reasonably range from retirement to an announcement that he wants an immediate rematch with Johny Hendricks.

So which is it likely to be? What are the odds it is retirement?

His trainer Firas Zahabi threw a number last week.

“I don’t know. It’s 50/50 and I don’t think he knows either,” said the Tristar head trainer. “I think if he ends it this way, it was good. He ended up with Fight of the Night. An incredible seesaw battle. He showed heart, he showed guts, he showed he’s a fighter.”

“He has 22 fights in the UFC, alone. That’s a lot of training camps. That’s a lot of years of sacrifice. He can’t go out. He can’t do this. He can’t have a wife and kids. He can’t have a steady girlfriend. He can’t have anything normal in his life. He’s living a very unbalanced life. How long does he want to do that for? He’s 32. When is he going to start living his life? At 40?”

The announcement will be made at an unlikely venue – a skating rink at a Quebec City mall. It was a previously scheduled appearance, with the fighter slated to meet fans and sponsors.

UFC president Dana White said the two have a meeting on Thursday, so whatever it is, GSP presumably wanted his boss to know first.

“I don’t think that he’s going to retire,” said White. “But I do know that he wants some time off, which is an issue — he just had over a year off for his ACL surgery.”
