Mexican-American UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez fights Brazilian UFC Interim heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum in a title unification fight n Saturday at UFC 189. The fight is in Mexico City, Mexico, and Cain will likely have the crowd behind him.
However, Werdum has excellent Spanish, and is a regular part of the Spanish broadcast team at UFC events, while Velasquez has limited Spanish. In fact, in a recent interview with Brazil’s Combate, Werdum says he feels more Mexican than Cain, and further, said that Cai’s injury that prevented their scheduled fight in November was a strategy.
“I get a lot of messages from the Mexican fans on social networks. I’m really happy for them,” said Werdum, as transcribed by Lucas Rezende for BE. “I have been to Mexico over 20 times and, actually, I feel more Mexican than Cain.”
“I believe (Cain’s injury) was a strategy. He had an injury, sure, but it wasn’t urgent, he didn’t need to stop. Now we can see who the true champion is, because Cain Velasquez hasn’t fought in two years. I’m still here and I was here to beat him, he just didn’t show up. I feel like the champion and on June 13, there can only be one and it will be me.”
