The rematch will have to wait.

Brazilian heavyweight Fabricio Werdum, who in June handed Fedor Emelianenko his first legitimate career loss, is on the shelf until the first quarter of 2011.

Werdum’s management today announced that “Vai Cavalo” is scheduled for elbow surgery on Aug. 18, and he’ll need six weeks of physical therapy before he can return to training.

According to the announcement, Werdum will undergo diagnostic/operative arthroscopic debridement. In layman’s terms, the outpatient procedure will remove bone fragments from Werdum’s left elbow, and the heavyweight hops to return to action in the first quarter of 2011.
