The term G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) was popularized for Muhammad Ali. Mixed martial arts has its G.O.A.T. contenders including Anderson Silva and Fedor Emelianenko. But weird things happen in MMA, too, so the sport needs a W.O.A.T. and there was a recent contender for W.O.A.T. comeback of the year.
The weirdest win of the year went down over the weekend at ACB 64 in Antalya, Turkey. Bantamweight Denis Mutsnek had Chechen opponent Nashkho Galaev in a tight guillotine, stuffed up against the cage.
Galaev appears to strike Mutsnek with a flailing left, and then his arms go limp. “HE’S OUT,” shout the commentators. The referee grabs Galaev’s arm and he does appear to be gone. The ref lunges forward suddenly to end the fight, while Mutsnek appears to loosen the hold, and … Galaev somehow returns to consciousness.
The fight has not ended after all. And Galaev comes back to win via Knee KO in Round 3.

Having started out 1-3, Galaev has now won five in a row. Khazakstan’s Mutsnek now has lost four in a row, including two by Flying Triangle.
Weird.
And for the record, the W.O.A.T. fighter is Datsik.
