Chris Weidman’s coach Ray Longo appeared recently on the Anik Florian Podcast and discussed the controversial fight ending in the co-main event of UFC 210. Gegard Mousasi yanked up Weidman’s torso until at least one hand was off the floor and delivered a solid knee to the head. Referee Dan Miragliotta is human and mistakenly thought both hands were down, the new definition of a grounded fighter. So Mirg told Weidman he had five minutes to recover.

In the meantime, two things happened. One, a doctor spoke with Weidman, who thought if he could not continue he would win; the doctor concluded he could not continue. And two, referee John McCarthy informed Miragliotta that the knees had been legal. So Mousasi was declared the winner.

Weidman’s coach was not impressed.

Stick to your f***ing decision, said Longo, as transcribed by MMA Fighting. I want to know who the hell convinced him to change his mind.

Take it step by step. Stick to your call and that’s it. Whether the knee was legal or illegal is really irrelevant. Because the other thing that I think people are missing is he didn’t go down when he got kneed. He would have kept fighting.

This is what nobody gets. He’s already in a different mindset now. You’re f*cking with a guy in the middle of the fight.

Now you tell a guy there’s an illegal knee, you encourage a guy to take a break, you’re changing the guy’s mindset.
