BJPenn.com received medical suspensions in an email from Pat Reid, Executive Director of the Edmonton Combat Sports Commission (ECSC), for this past weekend’s WEC 49 Varner vs. Shalorus at Rexall Place, in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
In a phone call from BJPenn.com, Mr. Reid specifically commented on the injuries suffered by Varner and Shalorus, With Shalorus and Varner dispatched in ambulances to the hospital for x-rays for suspected broken hands, feet and ribs, their medical suspensions are listed as indefinite – until they receive medical clearance before their next fights. These guys took quite a beating. Varner’s ribs looked in bad shape.
All fighters received some kind of suspension. ECSC by laws require that a fighter receive a minimum 5 day suspension even if a fight only last a few seconds. Minimum suspensions handed were 7 days.
Karen Darabedyan, Will Kerr, Josh Grispi and Eric Koch received 7 day medical suspensions.
Renan Barao, Rafael Rebello, Chris Cariaso, Raphael Assuncao, Bendy Casismir, Waggney Fabiano, Frank Gomez, Eddie Wineland and Chris Horodecki all received 14 day medical suspensions.
Anthony Leone, Daniel Downes and LC Davis received 21 day suspensions.
30 day suspensions were handed to Yves Jabouin, Mark Hominick, Will Campuzano and Diego Nunes.
Both Jamie Varner and Kamal Shalorus received indefinite medical suspensions due their injuries received during their bout. Varner is required to have X-ray on his right hand and foot, examination of left ribs and needs pre-fight medical clearance before next event. Shalorus is required to have X-ray on both hands and right lower leg and will need pre-fight medical clearance prior to next event.
