Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez appeared recently on ‘UFC Tonight’ and was asked if he wanted to wait for a title fight with Stipe Miocic if the champ is taking a break, or if he wanted a fight sooner.

There was an obvious #1 contender fight opponent. Fabricio Werdum took Cain’s title at UFC 188 last June, before losing it to Miocic, and then rebounding with a win over Travis Browne at UFC 203 on Saturday.

Werdum sought out Miocic on camera after both had fought at UFC 203, and requested a title shot. Miocic was agreeable, saying he will happily fight whoever the UFC puts in front of him. But it appears he wants to enjoy life a little bit first, as is his right.

So Stipe appears out for the rest of year. If that is the case, Velasquez had a clear goal.

“If Stipe doesn’t want to take a break, I want him next,” said Velasquez. “If he doesn’t want to take a break – I’ve been hearing that he might want to fight in 2017 – if that’s the case, then the only fight I’d want, and the only fight that makes sense right now would be to fight Werdum, in December.”

“This one is personal.”

Representatives from camps requested anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the booking publicly, but they told Steven Marrocco and John Morgan report for MMAjunkie that although the fight has not been signed, it has been offered to both sides, and that both sides are.

UFC 207 takes place on December 30, 2016 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
