At UFC 142 the referee had to stop the bout just twenty-nine seconds into the first round as Erick Silva dropped Carlos Prater with a knee and then began a relentess assault.
Silva was over joyed, thinking he had a quick TKO victory. After some discussion, referee Mario Yamasaki ruled and Bruce Buffer announced that Carlos Prater had won via disqualification, deeming the finishing strikes illegal as they targeted the back of the head.
Silva was shocked, and left Brazil with the DQ loss. But as the video was reviewed, it looked as through perhaps the referree had made the wrong decision and even UFC President Dana White suggested that Silva should appeal the decision.
As the event took place in Brazil, the authority to review and appeal falls solely to that of the UFC itself, and more in particular, Marc Ratner, VP of Regulatory Affairs. It seems that Silva’s management has started the process, speaking to MMAJunkie on the subject:
Manager Wallid Ismail would like his client Erick Silva’s loss changed to a win, or at the very least, a no-contest.
As early as next week, he could get an answer. Ismail today told MMAjunkie.com that UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner has assured him a review of the Silva vs. Carlo Prater, which took place this past Saturday at UFC 142.
