UFC exploring possibility of UFC fight for Cris Cyborg
Ariel Helwani reported on Wednesday’s UFC Tonight that the UFC is actively exploring the possibility of having Justino compete at UFC 198.
Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg is signed by the UFC, but fights for Invicta. The UFC does not have a women’s 145 lbs. division, but a plan was in place for Cyborg to drop weight over time, and challenge then champion Ronda Rousey for what was widely believed would have been the largest fight fight in WMMA history.
However, Rousey lost to Holly Holm, and Holm lost to Miesha Tate, so the long-Rousey-dominated division was suddenly in flux, and competitive. This greatly lessened the need for the inclusion of Cyborg to make the top of the division not a foregone conclusion. Further, Cyborg was dropping to 145 from around 168, so making 135 did not seem feasible.
However, Cyborg remains signed with the UFC. The fighter has a dream to fight in the Octagon, in an ideal world in her home city of Curitiba, Brazil.
The stars are aligning.
UFC 198: Werdum vs. Miocic will be held on May 14, 2016 at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil.
Now the extremely well connected Ariel Helwani reported on Wednesday’s UFC Tonight that the UFC is actively exploring the possibility of having Justino compete at UFC 198. It could be against a top bantamweight who wants the challenge. Holly Holm for example, would leap at the opportunity. Or the UFC could borrow a fighter from Invicta, or from a free agent.
