SALT LAKE CITY – MixedMartialArts.com was on scene and reporting live from Friday’s official “UFC 291: Poirier vs. Gaethje 2” fighter weigh-ins, where two fighters missed weight, leaving one fight in jeopardy.
The UFC 291 weigh-ins took place at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center. The nearby Delta Center hosts Saturday’s card, which features a main card on ESPN+ pay-per-view following prelims on ABC, ESPN and UFC Fight Pass.
In the main event, former UFC interim lightweight champions Dustin Poirier (29-7 MMA, 21-6 UFC) and Justin Gaethje (24-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) meet in a rematch of their 2018 classic. This time around, the winner will walk away with the UFC’s BMF title. Both made weight without issue.
That was not the case in a key welterweight matchup, though, with Michel Pereira (28-11 MMA, 6-2 UFC) coming in at 174 pounds for his contest with Stephen Thompson (17-6-1 MMA, 12-6-1 UFC). UFC officials announced that negotiations for the matchup were expected to continue into the afternoon.
Additionally, Vinicius Salvador (14-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC) was 128.5 pounds for his flyweight matchup with C.J. Vergara (11-4-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC). Salvador was fined 20 percent of his purse, but the bout will go on as scheduled.
