SALT LAKE CITY – MMA Underground was on scene and reporting live from Friday’s “UFC 278: Usman vs. Edwards 2” official weigh-ins, where 24 athletes made their fights official.
The early weigh-ins took place at the UFC host hotel and preceded the day’s ceremonial weigh-ins, which take place at 4 p.m. MT local time at Vivint Arena, the same venue that host the following night’s event that has a main card airing on ESPN+ pay-per-view following prelims on ABC, ESPN and ESPN+.
The night’s main event features reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (20-1 MMA, 15-0 UFC) facing top contender Leon Edwards (19-3 MMA, 11-2 UFC) in a rematch seven years in the making. The two headliners were the first two fighters to hit the scales.
Meanwhile, the co-main event features an increasingly tense grudge match between middleweight contender Paulo Costa (13-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and former UFC and Strikeforce champion Luke Rockhold (16-5 MMA, 6-4 UFC).
A women’s flyweight matchup was scrapped ahead of the weigh-ins, with health issues forcing Shanna Young (8-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) off the card, canceling her bout with Miranda Maverick (10-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC).
