The UFC has written a new chapter in the record book, selling 55,000 tickets for UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre in the company’s long-awaited Toronto debut.
While final gate numbers haven’t been tallied for the April 30 card, the sold-out event generated between $10 million-$11 million dollars at the live gate. Originally configured to seat 42,000, those seats were gone within the first hour of Thursday’s pre-sale for UFC Fight Club fans. Opening up more sections for Friday and Saturday sales to newsletter subscribers and the general public, an extra 13,000 seats were made available, allowing more fans to get their hands on the hottest ticket in town.
The 55,000 seat sales more than doubles the previous attendance record for mixed martial arts in North America, set at UFC 124 last December in Montreal when 23,152 packed the Bell Centre to see Georges St-Pierre beat Josh Koscheck. The live gate roughly doubles the previous standard of $5.4 million, set in December 2006 for UFC 66 in Las Vegas, when Chuck Liddell beat Tito Ortiz.
In addition, the sell-out was the biggest single-day event gate in Rogers Centre history, say building officials.
