For the first time in a long time, the UFC will be hosting their New Year’s Eve event after the ball drops on 2009. The Nevada State Athletic Commission has tentatively approved the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for a January 2nd show, presumably entitled UFC 108.
Word on the street was the organization considered holding the weigh-ins on Friday, Christmas Day, with the pay-per-view broadcast jumping off the following evening. However, with the NBA dominating X-Mas with a quintuple-header, it was unlikely that the UFC would garner as much interest as they would on a non-holiday weekend.
The UFC began loading-up their end of the year bash in 2006 when former UFC light heavyweight champions Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz met for the second time at UFC 66. Three years later, that event is still the organization’s top gate earner generating an astonishing $5,397,300.
